So, hopefully, the insights we\u2019ve gained from them can help someone else who\u2019s thinking about starting (or rescuing) an AI project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mbs.edu\/-\/media\/PDF\/Centres\/CfBA\/Research\/White-Papers\/2407_CfBA_Why-do-AI-projects-fail_FINAL.pdf?rev=4dbbb78fd6104c1e8a1d3c91ceddf20b&amp;hash=48690266942C02C43109F945841F2E91\">global study<\/a> interestingly found that up to 80% of AI projects fail to deliver on the intended outcome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At a glance, here\u2019s why most AI projects fail \ud83d\udcc9:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tackling the wrong business problems<\/li>\n<li>Data readiness and quality<\/li>\n<li>A lack of data governance and privacy controls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019ve also heard of some falling flat at the proof-of-concept phase, and others unravelling down the line due to users not taking to it, or the costs getting out of hand. Because of this, many projects will be abandoned in the first 6 months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s Actually Causing These Pitfalls?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The short answer: <strong><em>rushing.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AI hype is pushing businesses to move quickly, often without a clear plan. There\u2019s pressure from leadership, noise from competitors, and suddenly everyone feels like they need an AI strategy yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>That urgency often leads to shallow decision-making and problems that could have been avoided early on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The First Issue &#8211; Solving The Wrong Problem \ud83e\udd14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many projects start without a clear understanding of where AI will genuinely add value.<\/p>\n<p>AI isn\u2019t the solution to every problem. The key is identifying the right use case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That means pressure-testing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the problem valuable to the business?<\/li>\n<li>Is it actually solvable with AI?<\/li>\n<li>Can it scale if it works?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When those pieces align, you\u2019re far more likely to build something that supports real business goals, not just a technical experiment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Second Issue &#8211; Waiting for the \u201cPerfect Data\u201d \ud83d\udcca<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Data quality is critical, but waiting for \u201cperfect\u201d data across the entire business can slow progress completely.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to tackle data modernisation is to use a phased approach: start with the data that matters most to the use case, then improve from there.<\/p>\n<p>Having a modern data platform also makes a significant difference, making it easier to access, maintain and build on high-quality data over time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Third Issue &#8211; Underestimating the Costs \ud83e\udd11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AI is often positioned as a way to save time and money, but the reality is more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s consumption-based pricing, unclear cost models, and the need for ongoing human oversight, meaning costs can add up pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p>If the ongoing cost outweighs the value of the existing process, even a strong proof of concept won\u2019t make it to production.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fourth Issue &#8211; AI Literacy at the Executive Level \ud83d\udc69\ud83c\udffb\u200d\ud83d\udcbc<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still common for leadership teams to approve AI initiatives without fully understanding what\u2019s involved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re at that level, three simple questions can help cut through the AI jargon:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Have you done this before?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Has it been deployed to production?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Has it been running successfully for at least six months?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are a lot of self-proclaimed \u201cexperts\u201d in the market right now, but very rarely do they have what it takes. This whole market is still new and learning as they go.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fifth &#8211; Forgetting the Human Element \ud83e\udd1d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AI changes how people work. This is often overlooked when projects are treated as purely technical.<\/p>\n<p>For some employees, automation can feel like a step towards redundancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most successful teams address this early by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Involving people in the process<\/li>\n<li>Communicating transparently<\/li>\n<li>Giving teams a voice in how solutions are designed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Sixth Issue &#8211; No Continuous Improvement \u274c<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AI evolves often faster than the project lifecycle itself.<\/p>\n<p>What looked like the best approach at the start of a project might not be by the time a pilot is complete.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why ongoing iteration is critical.
